For those of you looking to travel to Africa, you may be considering Malawi. It was made famous when pop singer Madonna attempted to adopt one of its orphans and has been known as “The Warm Heart of Africa.” However, there is more to the country than what was reported then. To give you a better idea, we have gathered six quick facts everyone should know about Malawi, whether planning a trip there or not.
1. Travel Alert - Before going on a visit to any other nation, it is important to know if there is a travel alert for it or not. The U.S. Department of State keeps constant travel alerts and warnings for those traveling, including this section on Malawi. It is also a useful read even if you are not from the United States.
2. It is a Christian nation – Although some believe nations in Africa have tribal religions, this is not true for Malawi. Over 82% of the population is Christian. The rest breaks down as 13% Muslim, 1.9% other, and 2.5% none.
3. High birth rate – The birth rate for Malawi is 40.85 births per 1,000 people. This puts it tenth in the world on the list compiled by the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States.
4. High population growth – The current number of people in Malawi according to the same agency is over 15.8 million. The estimated growth is 2.763% which makes Malawi 17th in the world.
5. New party – For the first 30 years after being liberated as a British colony, Malawi was under the rule of President Hastings Kamuzu Banda. However, he lost in the first democratic presidential election in 1994. Since then, the country has made advances in moving away from overseas aid and towards independence.
6. Tobacco – A mostly farming country, Malawi’s biggest crop is tobacco. Because of its harmful implications, farmers have been trying to move away from tobacco and into crops that are more profitable and viable. These include spice crops such as paprika.
